MYERS BROTHERS HAVE GREAT NORTH/SOUTH SHOOTOUT
With the biggest race of the year on the line, the Myers Brothers race team did not disappoint!
The Sixth Annual North/South Shootout held at Concord Motor Speed Park started out Friday as
both Jason and Burt were very fast in all practice sessions. At 6:00 Friday evening the dream
weekend began with Burt taking his Capitol One, JRC Investments, DMC Auto Mart of King Modified
to a spot no other driver south of the Mason Dixon line had ever experienced, the pole position.
The fact that the pole just happened to be sponsored by DMC Auto Mart of King, made this feat
even sweeter. Jason took his Trentham Moorefield/Wendell Edward, DMC Auto Exchange racer out to
qualify and also ran a good time only .200 slower, but unfortunately not fast enough to make the top
four, so Jason had to run a heat race. That heat race was going good until a run in with Ed Flemke
left Jason out of a qualifying position, so he would have to run a consolation race on Saturday.
In the first consolation race, Jason would have to start dead last due to the bad luck of Friday
night’s heat race. At the drop of the green flag, Jason was fast and moved his DMC Auto Exchange
ride quickly up thru the field. With 7 laps to go a spin in front of Jason made the field bunch up
and Jason ran his way into a qualifying position.
As the 36 starters of the North/South Shootout took time to throw their DMC Auto Mart of King Frisbees
into the crowd, the anticipation for this event grew stronger. At the start young Erik Rudolf took
the point with Burt running second followed closely by Matt Hirschman in his DMC Auto Exchange modified.
Back in the pack, Jason was running very strong and after a pit stop around lap 58, Jason was one of,
if not the fastest cars on the track, passing cars on the high side and low, he was coming to the front!
Meanwhile up front, Burt had taken the lead, after staying out on the track when the majority of the field
pitted earlier. Burt was leading the race, desperately needing a caution flag as everyone had to make a
mandatory pit stop by lap 100 of the 125 lap race. On lap 98, Burt got the break he needed as the caution
flag was displayed for the stalled car of Bobby Santos. To the pits, 2 new tires and back out in the 12th
position.
At this point in the race, Jason had moved all the way up to 5th and was still very fast. Burt was the
class of the field and on a march to the front. Another timely caution flag tightened the field and another
good break on the restart as Ted Christopher, the 2008 Nascar Whelen Modified Champion, lost control on the
restart and spun him self out of first position. Another restart, and Matt Hirschman takes the lead, as the
2 time defending champion, you know he will be hard to beat.
As the laps ran out, Matt was in command but Burt was the fastest car on the track, but it did not look like
he would have enough laps to catch Hirschman. On lap 118, the break of the night happened for Burt, as the
caution flag was out for the slowing car of Danny Bohn.
On the restart the running order was Hirschman, his next door neighbor, Eric Beers, and Burt. Jason was still
running a great race but his tires he had taken on earlier had about given up and he was stabilizing his position
around 7th. Burt on the other hand, was getting ready for more good luck, as on the lap 118 restart, Beers running
second, had an electrical problem and dropped off the pace, bringing out another caution flag.
On this restart, it was history in the making as on lap 121 Burt took his Capitol One/JRC Investments/DMC Auto Mart
of King racer past Hirschman’s DMC Auto Exchange ride and did what many people thought might be impossible, HE WON THE
NORTH/SOUTH SHOOTOUT! Victory Lane interviews and hugs everywhere, but the most important thing. The car passed post
race tech and it is official, we have a Southern Winner in the North/South Shootout.
Hirschman was a gracious 2nd, as he knew Burt had fresher tires and a faster race car. Finishing 3rd was Right Foot
Ronnie Silk and Jason came from 26th to finish 7th.
Thanks to all the people at Concord and the North South, Charles Kepley, Dale Wolbrink, promoters and a special thanks
to Doug, Derek and Chris, the announcers at the North/South, as they were very helpful to all of us at DMC. Thank you
to all involved and again Burt Myers wins the North/South Shootout.
Happy times,
MWN
